Scope and content of the collection:

This collection has 3 handwritten documents pertaining to disputes over honour (or precedence) belong to the family of an Ambalakarrar headman. The notion of honour establishes ritual, and therefore social, status at the level of the locality and takes the shape of the order in which ritual offerings are distributed during the annual temple festivals. This group of documents concern three successive conflicts within the same temple.

System of arrangement of the collection:

The collection is arranged in one series that is (1) Honour dispute documents.

(1) Honour dispute documents

This series (1889-1953) contains documents related to a conflict over the honour given at the Kallazhakar Temple annual festival to the document holder’s family which was settled by the  Madras Endowment Board. The second conflict concerns the distribution of honours within the kin group itself, in particular a disagreement about the order given from their ancestor’s time, which was settled during a panchayat. The third one deals with the struggle to obtain new entitlements in order to receive the honour in the temple. Though one of the document is fairly recent, it is included here as it is related to the  previous two documents.
